Re:GreekResurgence Greek ProjectWe are very excited to introduce to you Re:Greek. This is a free online Greek tool for those that don't have the software for your own personal Greek study. Below is an interview conducted with the creator of Re:Greek, Zack Hubert. Zack is a pastor at Mars Hill Church over the ever-growing technology department. Before he came to work with Mars Hill Church full time he was working at Amazon, teaching classes at church and creating a greek online website for fun called zhubert.com. Having the servant heart Zack decided it would be synergistic to integrate this great Bible tool into Resurgence for a larger audience and benefit for the body of Christ. Enjoy.
Gary Shavey: Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Mars Hill Church?
Zack Hubert: Sure thing. This last March I came on staff as the Pastor of Technology here at Mars Hill Church. What that means is that I'm thinking about innovative ways that Technology can encourage community and expand the reach of the Gospel.
GS: What is the heart behind creating an online Greek tool for free?
ZH: The idea is that the Bible and the study of the Scriptures should be available to anyone regardless of where they were born or what financial resources they have. Technology has changed a lot in the last 5 years and is going to continue to change at an even more rapid pace. It used to be that software was built over the span of several years and required a big department to put out a quality product. I would argue that various advances have made it possible for a small group of people to put out an even higher quality product today that can grow and change more frequently. It's this agile development which should enable lower cost side projects like Re:Greek to really flourish. In addition, a more agile product should be able to be designed that is easier to use. I have in mind an online video tutorial system, thus replacing the 'tell me' style it currently has with a 'show me' learning structure.
GS: Why did you want to bring this to Resurgence?
ZH: I see a strong alignment between the vision and direction of zhubert.com and that of Resurgence; we are both interested in equipping and resourcing pastors and churches at large. I believe by combining our efforts, we'll be able to reach more people.
GS: What is your vision for the Re:Greek Project?
ZH: To this point, zhubert.com has been largely a one man project. In my spare time, I've added various functions and made various improvements, but it has moved along quite slowly and has been limited by my imagination. My vision for Re:Greek is that it would be an Open Source project that could capture the imagination of software developers all around the world. I want to see dozens of developers and designers submitting improvements, new features, localizing Re:Greek into their local language, and innovating on this shared platform. I'll release more in the near future about how this will work, but it will be a model similar to Linux or Ruby on Rails if you are familiar with those projects.
GS: How about any last thoughts on technology benefiting the body of Christ?
ZH: I think I could talk your ear off on this one Gary. I've been writing about the role of Technology in the body of Christ at my blog: Codex on the VoxPopNetwork. In many ways, Technology exists to solve ministry problems, to extend the reach of the Gospel, and to promote real community. Though there are many challenges to using Technology well, the simple reality is that there are many things that we simply cannot do without the use of Technology. Rather than be constrained by that, the body of Christ should pull together, with those at Technology epicenters helping out those that don't have the same access to software developers and designers. By being connected in this way, we can massively collaborate and demonstrate our Christian love for one another.
